NSEC Project Managers are familiar with the required Project Design Criteria necessary for working around Federally Protected Species. For those instances when impacts cannot be avoided, our Project Managers can conduct Species Specific Surveys, develop Habitat Conservation Plans, and coordinate Formal Consultation with the US Fish & Wildlife Service, the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, and the National Marine Fisheries Service to achieve compliance with the Endangered Species Act and the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act.
NSEC Project Managers work closely with Species Conservation Planning Section staff and Regional Biologists to obtain permits authorizing relocation or impacts to Florida's protected land-dwelling wildlife. Our Project Managers are up to date on all permitting requirements associated with these species.
Scrub-Jays are restricted to scrub oak communities in Florida. This habitat is under constant threat as prime development habitat. Because of its highly restricted choice of habitat and low dispersal ability, populations of the Florida Scrub-Jay have become very isolated.
Skinks typically occur in habitats that contain a mosaic of open sandy patches interspersed with forbs, shrubs. and trees. Due to their small size and digging and burrowing habits, skink species are difficult to detect.
The Crested Caracara prefers open habitats, typically grasslands, prairies, pastures, with scattered trees, shrubs, or palm trees in which it nests. Adult pairs are highly territorial and exhibit strong site fidelity. Young remain with their parents for several months after fledging, and at some sites, two broods are raised per year.
Bald eagle are protected under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. Eagles mate for life, choosing the tops of large trees to build their nests which may reach up to 10 feet across and weigh a half ton. NSEC can assist with nest location, development planning, and monitoring during construction.
Gopher tortoise prefer well-drained, sandy soils found in habitats mesic and xeric habitats. The gopher tortoise is a Candidate species for federal protection and is a State-designated Threatened species in Florida requiring avoidance or relocation. NSEC can assist with permitting from survey to relocation on projects of all scale.
